SHIATS university assault case: Former SP MP Atique Ahmed arrested

Allahabad, Feb 11: Former Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament(MP) Atique Ahmed on Saturday was arrested by the Naini police for beating up officials of the Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology & Science (SHIATS), in December last year. In this case, a FIR was earlier register against the MP. The arrest came after the state High Court thrashed the police. Court had asked tough questions to the police for not arresting people involved in the SHIATS case and had given a time frame of 48 hours. Police had not taken any action after the FIR was lodged. ETV UP reported about Ahmed’s arrest.

As per webindia123, a bench of Allahabad court had said if SP of Allahabad can not arrest the accused then it will transfer him to some other place and also will ponder over handing the case to some other agency if police fails to nab the accused.

In December 2016, Ahmed along with his 50 henchmen had assaulted the staff and senior officers of SHIATS after he and his aides had barged into the institute. The whole incident was captured on CCTV.

SHIATS authorities had earlier alleged that Ahmed along with his men had forcibly entered the building of the director at the administrative block and had assaulted the staff members.  Allahabad police in this regard had registered a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder), 395 (robbery), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult) and 147 (rioting) of IPC and & Criminal Law Amendment Act was lodged with Naini police station against Ahmed and his supporters.

After the incident, the students of  SHIATS had held protests in Allahabad against the former MP demanding his arrest.

SHIATS authorities had earlier lodged a criminal case against two students: Saif Siddiqui and Saqib Ahmad on the charges of threatening teachers and misbehavior. The students were not allowed to take exams after they were found cheating. It was also reported that Ahmed and his supporters were constantly pressuring the SHIATS authorities to take back the case.

As per Indian Express, Ahmed is accused in the murder of BSP legislator Raju Pal and many other murder and extortion cases.
