New Delhi: Senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut hailed Congress decision of appointing Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as general secretary of UP east and said that Congress will get benefit. Priyanka Gandhi on Wednesday had formally entered politics.
Talking to news agency ANI, Raut said, “It’s a good decision by Rahul Gandhi. People of India always had a relation with Gandhi family. Indira Gandhi’s legacy will always remain in this country, Congress will benefit from this.”
Priyanka Gandhi, 47, will take over her new assignment from the first week of February, a statement from the party said. She will assist her brother, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, in the Hindi heartland state.
Party workers speculated that Priyanka Gandhi, who continues the Gandhi family’s legacy of active politics, may contest the polls from her mother Sonia Gandhi’s constituency Rae Bareli.
In the months ahead of the elections, she has been tasked to match the charisma of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, two-star campaigners for the BJP who also have a strong presence in the region.
On Priyanka’s entry into active politics, Rahul had said, “I am very happy that my sister Priyanka will assist me in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha polls. She is very capable.” The state responsibility has been equally divided between Scindia and Priyanka.
However, BJP had termed Priyanka’s entry into active politics as an admission by the Congress that its president Rahul Gandhi has “failed” in providing leadership and said he has opted for family “crutches” after facing rejection from other opposition parties.
