Bhopal, June 11: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan broke his ‘peace fast’ on Sunday afternoon by drinking water. He had sat on an indefinite fast on Saturday at the Dussehra Maidan in Bhopal in a bid to bring peace in Madhya Pradesh which is facing the wrath of violent protests by the farmers after five of them were killed in police firing on Tuesday whereas, the sixth one succumbed to injured at a hospital on Friday.

Earlier in the day, Chouhan, as quoted by NDTV, had said that the families of the six deceased farmers urged him to stop fasting. “The families told me that ‘you don’t need to fast’. They asked me to visit their village,” he reportedly said. He further said that his government will do all it can for the farmers. “One thing that made me emotional was the number of our children that we lost in these protests. Their parents came to meet me yesterday and despite such grief befalling upon them, asked me to put an end to the issue,” he had said.

The CM said, “We will decide the further course of action on Monday.” He also emphasised that he is sympathetic towards the issues of the farmers. “Their problem is ours” he reiterated.

Before breaking the fast, CM Shivraj said, “We will make the state land use advisory service so that farmers get correct and timely information about climate change. I, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi promise that we will irrigate every land. We have decided to implement every policy with the consent of farmers.”

To address the growing unrest among the farmers after they began the protest on Monday demanding better price for their crops, the CM sat on a hunger strike on Saturday and urged the farmers to come forward and discuss instead of violent protests. Meanwhile, there are no reports when the farmers will call off their protests.
