Faryab, January 19 : A husband in Afghanistan has reportedly cut off the nose of his wife in a moment of anger. The photograph of the Afghan woman whose nose was dislodged by her husband in a state of anger has sparked a major furor online, with many social activists demanding his punishment for the incident. “Mohammad Khan, the husband cut off Reza Gul’s nose with a pocket knife,” Faryab governor’s spokesman Ahmad Javed Bedar told News Agencies. Also Read - Taliban to Allow Women in Afghanistan to Pursue Studies at Universities: Report
Reza Gul, aged 20 was immediately rushed to the hospital after the attack. Mohammed is believed to have fled to a Taliban-controlled vicinity especially in places where such practices are still widely supported by the militant group. The photograph of the woman was also widely shared on social media. This has led to many people demanding calls for a tough action against the husband.(ALSO READ : Afghanistan continues to be dangerous place: US).
It is still not clear what instigated the husband to attack Gul in this manner. She was also reportedly the mother of a one-year-old child. Gul was reportedly married off to Mohammed five years ago when she was only a teenager. Bedar said Khan, an unemployed man, had recently returned from neighbouring Iran and may have joined the Taliban after fleeing home following the attack.
The government which has promised to protect and the rights of women in the country has lately not been able to prevent some deeply concerning series of attacks on women in the country. Last year in November a young woman was also stoned to death after being accused of adultery in the central province of Ghor.
