Ludhiana, April 4: Namdhari community leader Mata Chand Kaur who was shot at by unidentified assailants in Ludhiana, Punjab on Monday early morning passed away after succumbing to her bullet injuries at 2 pm on the same day. Wife of former Namdhari sect head Jagjit Singh went to Bhaini Sahib gurudwara when unidentified gunmen shot her twice; one bullet hit her in the abdomen while another pierced underneath her ear. A couple of assailants shot her inside the gurudwara and immediately fled towards Macchiwara and immediately panic gripped the entire area and left everyone shocked. Soon after the incident police forces engulfed the entire. Kaur was promptly rushed to the Satguru Partap Singh hospital for treatment but doctors failed to revive her. There has been a fight between the two groups of the Namdhari community and the Namdhari sect is now headed by former head Jagjit Singh’s cousin Uday Singh. So by relation Kaur was the aunt of Uday.
The Namdhari sect has been involved in a bitter succession war well ahead of Satguru Jagjit Singh’s death and factionalism came to the fore. One faction owed allegiance to Satguru Uday Singh and Mata Chand Kaur, the younger son of her brother-in- law who she had anointed as the sect head following her husband Jagjit Singh’s death, and the other to elder brother of Uday Singh, Thakur Dalip Singh.
