Sonia Gandhi aborts Varanasi roadshow: Congress President falls ill, Narendra Modi wishes her speedy recovery

This is not the first time the 69-year-old Congress President made headlines or her deteriorating health condition.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi was taken ill in between her roadshow in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi. Sonia Gandhi had to be rushed to Delhi for medical help after she complained of some health issues. Initially the reason behind her health condition was not known, later party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said she suffered from a bout of fever and high blood pressure, but the condition was stable.

After provided with medical help in Varanasi, Gandhi returned back to Delhi by a chartered flight close to midnight only to be taken to Army’s Research and Referral Hospital. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was present at the airport to receive the unwell Congress president and accompany her to the hospital after she was dehydrated.

Vadra confided that Gandhi has not been keeping well for a couple of days, but since the road show was there, she was against cancelling the program and went ahead by visiting Varanasi. PM Modi spoke to Sheila Dikshit and inquired about Gandhi’s health. PM also offered to send a doctor and an aircraft to bring the Congress president back to Delhi.

After proper medical ailment, Gandhi said, “Due to illness, I could not complete my visit for which I regret. I could not seek the blessings of Kashi Vishwanth in the holy month of Savan. I will come back soon. I am thankful to all citizens of Varanasi and Congress workers for the love and affection.” On advice of doctors she had to cut short last 500 m, but she will be back in Varanasi  to visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple.

This is not the first time the 69-year-old Congress President made headlines or her deteriorating health condition. In the year 2011 Sonia Gandhi had underwent a surgery in the US for an unspecified ailment. But soon the media reported that Sonia was being treated for Cancer for a duration of 8 months since she had undergone the surgery at New York’s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre. Another report stated that the Congress president was understood to have undergone a surgery for cervical cancer The Congress spokesperson had appealed to media to show some sensitivity after such reports broke out in the media.
