Speed limit REDUCED! The commuters will not be able to run their vehicles at the top speed of 120 kmph on the Agra–Lucknow Expressway in the coming days as Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) is planning to reduce the maximum vehicular speed limit. The Authority is considering reducing the maximum vehicular speed limit from 120 kmph to 75 kmph to prevent accidents.

Speed Checks

In addition to smaller vehicles, a similar speed checks might be implemented for other types of vehicles as well. Notably, the proposals were discussed at the recent meeting, which was headed by UPEIDA CEO Deepak Kumar.

“An analysis was done on how to reduce the number of accidents, particularly on winter nights when there is fog. One proposal that came up was to reduce the speed, and we’re evaluating it. Besides speed limit, driving under influence of alcohol and the usual driver fatigue are also major issues,” UPEIDA’s additional CEO, Srihari Pratap Shahi said.

However, the final decision on the proposals is yet to be taken.

Other Points Discussed In The Meeting

The officials also discussed violations like – not driving on the correct lane, triple-riding on two-wheelers or not wearing helmets – during the meeting. The suggestion came up in the meeting that such violations of norms will now be checked by camera-based systems.

The authorities have implemented penalties for speed-limit infractions using electronic challans. Further enforcement measures will be carried out with interceptor vehicles and laser cameras at various sites.

It is to be noted that between 2021 and 2025, as many as 7,024 incidents of accidents took place on the highway, out of which 54.7 happened due to driver fatigue or drowsiness. During these four years, a total of 811 people lost their lives while over 3500 suffered injuries. In the same period 369 died and over 4200 were injured in car accidents. It means that 45.5 percent of fatalities happened due to car accidents. The nighttime emerged as the ‘most dangerous’ time to drive on the highway.
