New Delhi, April 26: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in the past week. Barely spent a day in the House, the saffron icon is set in action. Swamy has sought suspension of Question Hour in the Upper House to conduct a short debate on the scam. The scandal is back in limelight, after an Italian court observed that “corruption” took place in the deal between the erstwhile Indian government and the Italian firm Finmeccanica. The Rs 3,600 crore deal was quashed by the UPA government in 2013 after accusations of corruption propped up. Former Indian Air Force chief SP Tyagi, along with personnel in the Ministry of Defence were accused of receiving kickbacks. On Tuesday, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad addressed a press conference, alleging that the trail of kickback involved then Defence Minister AK Antony and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. The deal was inked in 2010. The UPA government had agreed to buy 12 VVIP choppers from Finemennica. Italian court has observed that Finmeccanica paid bribe to secure the contract.
BJP has planned to corner Congress in the Parliament over the issue of AgustaWestland and Ishrat Jahan encounter. While Swamy would lead the pack in the Rajya Sabha, Anurag Thakur will take the forefront role in initiating debate on the role played by former Home Minister P Chidambaram in handling the Ishrat Jahan case.
