New Delhi, May 27: Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah on Friday stated that there would be a cabinet reshuffle soon in the Union government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Though he did not specify any date, there was a indication that non-performing minister would be shown the exit doors and it can also be speculated that two leaders — Subramanian Swamy and Ram Madhav — could be inducted in the ministry.
Briefing the media on Friday, Shah specified it clearly that as the BJP government has completed two years at the Centre and three more years are left for the tenure, they do want to make some changes in the Union government. Filling the vacant post and changing the non-performing ministers is on the key list of the party president. There is also a speculation that Subramanian Swamy could become the next law minister and party kingmaker in Jammu and Kashmir and Assam Ram Madhav could be awarded with Minister of State for External Affairs. Commenting on the reshuffle, Shah said, “There will be … but a date is not certain.” He added, “Whenever there will be a reshuffle, political situation will be one of the dimensions of selection.” The second statement clearly indicated that new members in the cabinet are required and for that their political popularity is being considered.
Filling the vacant seats in the ministry is a key challenge for PM Modi, as after Union Sport Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Assam and Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar is in line for Goa Assembly, things are looking murkier. Also, in the line are Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani, Union Minister Sadananda Gowda and Union Minister Meneka Gandhi.
The names for Smriti Irani and Meneka Gandhi are making the rumours as the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections are scheduled to take place in 2017, where BJP secured 71 seats out of 80, and the party wants a face to challenge Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati. Though nothing is clear till now, but it is certain that from here BJP will take cautious steps to strengthen its base in Uttar Pradesh.
