New Delhi, August 3: Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan described her decision to suspend agitating Members of Parliament (MP) of Congress as a last retort to conduct the proceedings of the house. “It is my responsibility to ensure the functioning of the house,” said Mahajan justifying her decision.
Mahajan accused the Congress MPs of exhibiting disrespect towards the speaker. “Attempts were made to overshadow the speaker. This should never happen,” said the lower house chair. Expressing her disappointment over the Congress parliamentarians using placards in the house, Mahajan said, “From the past 8 days, I’ve been trying tolerating. But when they are placing the placards in front of the speaker, that is unacceptable. Despite my efforts, this placard culture did not stop.”
Showing no regret over her decision to ban the MPs for the next five days of proceedings, Mahajan said “Somewhere, its a good start.” She further said that circumstances forced her to take the decision. “Taking stringent action is not in my nature. That is why I called All Party meeting and tried my best. This message is for everyone ,everyone has to go by rules,” she added. However, members of opposition have fiercely criticised the move by the chair. Leader of Congress in the house, Mallikarjun Kharge alleged Mahajan of hypocrisy. “When she was part of the opposition she used to hold placards,” said Kharge. Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Bannerjee said “We are boycotting Speaker’s decision. We are supporting Congress on this issue.” Congress President Sonia Gandhi has called the move as ‘undemocratic’ and announced her party would protest against it.
