In another chapter in the bitter dispute over the property left behind by deceased industrialist Sunjay Kapur, his mother, Rani Kapur, has alleged that Sunjay’s wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, never mourned his death, but made every possible move to “usurp” the late billionaire’s assets, which are estimated to be worth Rs 30,000 crore.
During a hearing on Monday, senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, representing Rani Kapur, told the Delhi High Court that Sunjay Kapur will is inexplicably silent on the existence of his mother, even though it claims that Kapur got everything from her.
Rani’s lawyer also claimed that she was never told about Sunjay’s will, and noted that he (Sunjay) would have at least mentioned in the will that he does not want to give anything to his mother.
Advocate Gaggar said Sunjay Kapur and Priya Sachdev had a troubled marriage, and the couple had frequent fights since May 2023, when marital discord surfaced.
Rani Kapur’s plea said it was “highly unlikely and improbable that Sunjay would make Priya the sole beneficiary of his personal estate”, and Sunjay Kapur shared “a deep bond and equal affection with all his children, his mother and other members of the Kapur family”.
Rani claimed that instead of grieving Sunjay’s death, Priya made every possible move to take control of his assets, and alleged that the daughter-in-law concealed massive assets belonging to the deceased in the list of assets submitted before the court, including paintings, bank balances, mutual fund, life insurance, rental income and watches.
The submissions were made before Justice Jyoti Singh during the hearing of a suit of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor’s children, challenging their late father Sunjay Kapur’s purported will of his assets, reportedly worth Rs 30,000 crore.
Karisma’s children have questioned the authenticity of the purported will, and filed an application for an interim injunction to to restrain Priya Kapur from alienating them from Sunjay’s assets.
The top court listed the matter for further arguments on December 3.
Sunjay Kapur, the ex-husband of famous Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, died of a heart attack while playing a polo match in the United Kingdom on June 12. At first, it was believed that the 53-year-old had died due to a sudden heart attack, but later reports emerged that he had reportedly swallowed a bee by accident, and its sting caused an allergic reaction, triggering a cardiac arrest that led to his demise.
Kapur has left behind a vast business empire valued at staggering $4.7 billion (about Rs 31,000 crore) business empire. However, neither Karisma Kapoor, nor his sisters or children have inherited the fortune. Priya Kapur, Sunjay’s wife has laid claim to the fortune, with a purported will which names her as the sole heir of the late billionaire.
