The trailer for the much-awaited movie, “M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story,” was finally released. Based on the life of iconic Indian cricketer Mahindra Singh Dhoni, the film stars Sushant Singh Rajput as the titular hero.
We all know Dhoni as the beloved ODI and T20 captain of the Indian cricket team. We know his as the leader who brought home the World Cup in 2007. We know him as the profusely talented captain of the Chennai Super Kings as they won the Indian Premier League in 2010 and 2011. We know him as the recipient of the Padma Shri award or as the 23rd highest paid athlete in the world. What we don’t know is his tedious, tough journey to reach where he is.
In the biographical film, Rajput will allow us to live the life Dhoni did as a kid who loved to bat while playing cricket, as a son trying to appease his father who wants him to study and not play, as a ticket collector at Kanakpur station who dreams of moving onto playing the sport he is passionate about. Mostly, we will get to see Mahi as a confident, no-nonsense learner who improves on his game with each chance he gets.
Rajput is a great fit to bring this character to life on-screen. His subtlety and emotions come across flawlessly. According to Dhoni, who helped Rajput learn more about him, he kept asking questions to the point where even Dhoni needed to take a break. Clearly, he has put in a lot of effort and it shows. It doesn’t hurt that both of them look quite similar and very handsome!

Anupam Kher plays his father, Pan Singh, and does justice to a stern character. Bhumika Chawla plays Jayanti Gupta, Dhoni’s sister.
Luckily, the trailer only shows a couple of scenes towards the end that focus on his love life. The rest is devoted to an unbelievable journey of hard work. That is the story we want to see. From a young boy with dreams to leading our country to victory is a huge achievement, especially when it comes to cricket. It is not just a regular sport in India, it is beyond that. People believe it is a religion in itself, when in fact, it is the most secular sport that combines all religions together.
Dhoni stunned and created history when he took charge of the Indian team. For that, he will always be an inspiration. Let’s hope that the film sticks to telling us his story in the best possible, real way. Based on the trailer, it looks like that will be the case.
“M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story” is directed by Neeraj Pandey and it will hit theaters on September 30, 2016.
