New Delhi, Dec 14: External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj has been named one of the 15 ‘Global Thinkers’ of the year on Wednesday by the American News Publication, Foreign Policy. Swaraj, who underwent a kidney transplant on December 10, has been known for helping people in an unconventional method using micro-blogging site Twitter. Among all of Swaraj’s achievement as a proficient diplomat, the magazine took note of the July 2016, when she tweeted to roughly 6 million followers that 10,000 Indian workers employed in Saudia Arabia faced a “food crisis.” What followed was a social media operation through out weeks in which Swaraj posted information for migrants about rations provided by the Indian Embassy, claims for unpaid wages, and government-organized transportation home. Foreign Policy also mentioned her help for issues ranging from Yemen to her personal intervention in many such instances when she has used Twitter to resolve issues. According to the magazine, Buzzfeed has named her “the most badass foreign minister on the internet”. Twitter India in one of its tweets on December 11 wished ailing Swaraj for a speedy recovery in a personalised video which highlighted her extraordinary ways of personally answering call for help put up by those in distress on Twitter.
Swaraj who is a former Supreme Court lawyer took the office as the Minister of External Affairs on May 26, 2014. What many people little know is that in 1998, she also served as the 5th Chief Minister of Delhi for a brief term.
In 2004, Sushma Swaraj was awarded the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award, which is given by the Indian Parliamentary Group to outstanding members of the Indian Parliament for overall contribution in the Indian Parliament.
Following her name figuring in the list of ‘Global Thinkers’ of the year in Foreign Policy magazine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her in Twitter.
Apart from Sushma Swaraj, the others who have been featured is this list are Hillary Clinton, Angela Merkel and Justin Trudeau.
Swaraj underwent a successful kidney transplant on December 10 and has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Following her sickness in November she was admitted in the hospital due to kidney failure. Consequently, such is her fan following and their love for her, many people made news for them coming forward to donate their kidney for the minister.
The minister while has tried to help as many of the distress calls over Twitter as she can, there have been few instances when her witty replies to impractical demands by people have also gained her popularity. In one such instance, she replied to a twitter user who wanted his refrigerator to be repaired.
Swaraj’s approach towards diplomacy using the micro-blogging site has been an unconventional method but has finally proved her excellence in governance at a personal level. This feature in Foreign Policy has added another feather in her diplomatic cap.
