New York, Sep 26: Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj delivered a hard-hitting speech at the United Nations, sending a stern message to Pakistan. In her address, Swaraj categorically accused Pakistan of spreading terrorism in South Asia and providing a safe haven to terrorists. In her appeal to the United Nations General Assembly, she demanded action against Pakistan for not intending to join the fight against terrorism, and instead using terrorism as a state policy. In what appeared to be the most fiery part of of her speech, Swaraj asserted that all the strategies being planned by Pakistan break Kashmir from India would remain unsuccessful.
Moreover, the speech of Sushma Swaraj was an extension of the kind of narrative being attempted to be set by the Narendra Modi government in the aftermath of the Uri terror attack. By underlining that Pakistan needs to diplomatically isolated for its covert support for terror, Swaraj validated the strategy enacted by Modi government in response to the gruesome cross-border assault. Here are the top 10 quotes from Swaraj’s speech:
“Terrorism should be defeated. We need to get united. If we fail, our coming generations would not forgive us. But some nations do not want to fight against terrorism. If they don’t, we need to isolate them.”“Nurturing terrorism and providing safe haven to terrorists is a passion for some nations. We all have to come together to fight the scourge of terrorism, if some country is not willing then it must be isolated.”“While the world is fighting against terrorism, one nation is protecting terrorists. Not only are they provided safe haven, but the terrorists are openly holding rallies in their nation. There should be action taken against such nations which want to promote terrorism.”“To those raking allegations of human rights violations in Kashmir, their own houses are of glass. They should not throw stones at others. Why don’t they look within. What is happening in Balochistan?”“They (Pakistan) said we are imposing preconditions for talks. What pre-conditions were imposed when we invited Pakistan PM for swearing-in ceremony? What precondition was imposed when PM Modi landed in Lahore to meet the Pakistani PM? We have left no stone unturned to extend a hand of friendship. But what we got in return – Pathankot, Uri and Bahadur Ali.”“Bahadur Ali (LeT terrorist apprehended in Jammu) is a living evidence of how Pakistan is attempting to spread terrorism in India.”“If Pakistan thinks that it could break away any part of India through instigating passions and spreading terrorism, then they are highly mistaken.”“Kashmir is an integral part of India, and always will be. Pakistan should stop dreaming.”“Those who sow seeds extremist ideologies, reap a bitter harvest. This germ of evil has grown into a hydra-headed monster.”
While some pro-establishment experts have described her speech to be short, crisp and perfectly targeted to embarrass and expose Pakistan. On the other hand, some have raised doubts whether Swaraj was successful in perfectly retaliating to Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif, who did not refrain from calling names and equating the conflict in Indian territory of Kashmir with that of Palestine under Israeli occupation.
