Feb 16: The results of the annual survey on cleanliness of cities in India is out and Mysuru had emerged as the cleanest of all cities, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi remained in the bottom 10 cities! The holy city, which see thousands of people flock to it on a pilgrimage, has been branded as one of the dirtiest cities in the country and has been grouped under the “Slow Movers”, according to the list which has categorised them according to their level of cleanliness. Greater Mumbai and Navi Mumbai meanwhile, made it to the top 10 and were branded as “leaders” in cleanliness.

Swachh Survekshan is a cleanliness monitor that releases results based on extensive studies and surveys conducted in all cities across the country.The surveys are carried out by the Quality Council of India (QCI). Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu had released the results of the survey on Monday and the cities have been categorised into four categories, according to their levels of cleanliness and sanitation. The survey revealed that in general cities in the South and East have taken to the Clean India Campaign better than their counterparts in the North and West of India. This is the second time that the survey has been conducted ever since it was launched in October 2014. Even then the cleanest city had been Mysuru. A comparative analysis of the two surveys shows that four cities have improved their ranks to break into top 10 in 2016- Visakhapatnam, Surat, Rajkot and Gangtok. These four have pushed down Navi Mumbai, Chennai, Pune and Nashik.
