New Delhi, Dec 16: The Congress headquarters has turned into a big fete site as party workers are celebrating Rahul Gandhi’s elevation as president. Rahul Gandhi will formally take charge of the party from his mother Sonia Gandhi. The venue is fully packed with Congress supporters and workers across the country. Sweets are being distributed outside the venue by the enthusiastic Congress supporters.
Sonia, the longest Congress President, retired from the post on Friday. Her 19-year tenure came to an end yesterday but her political journey is still not over.
The venue and the area around the Congress office is decked up with banners, hoardings congratulating the Gandhi scion. A band is also performing performing live at the venue.
Senior party leaders Sheila Dikshit, Janardhan Dwivedi, Pawan Kumar Bansal, Sanjay Nirupam have already arrived and Rahul is expected to join in soon.
On December 11, the Amethi MP was elected unopposed as no leader contested against him. The 47-year-old will now lead the 130-year-old party and is already facing many challenges.
