Swine Flu Claims 1,100 Lives; 22,186 Cases Reported This Year

The outbreak of swine flu in India was first reported in 2009 and 2010 when it had claimed over 2,7000 lives. This year, the number of deaths have shot up five times as compared to 2016.

Swine Flu has badly affected Gujarat, Maharashtra

New Delhi, Sept 2: India has reported a total of 22,186 swine flu cases due to increased ‘incidence to a change in the virus’s strain’, claims health ministry data. This year, nearly 1,100 people have succumbed to the virus attack. Maharashtra remains the worst-affected with a toll of 488. Gujarat is on the second spot with 343 deaths.

As per reports, the H1N1 strain that is in circulation this year is of Michigan strain. Earlier, it was of California strain.

In 2017, since January, 45% of the H1N1 casualties, out of the total number, have been contributed by Maharashtra. The state’s H1N1 toll for all of 2016 was 25. Reports say that most deaths were in the working age group of 25-50 years. Maharashtra is followed by Gujarat which has a mortality rate of 7.23%, with 4,741 cases this year.

Meanwhile, the largest state of India, Uttar Pradesh has reported a total of 2,798 H1N1 cases as against 871 in 2009. There have been 64 deaths, claims state health ministry data.

In Punjab, 31 deaths have been reported till now due to the H1N1 virus whereas, Himachal Pradesh has witnessed 27 deaths. Notably, there have been 86 deaths so far in Rajasthan and a total of 910 cases of swine flu have been reported. In Madhya Pradesh, a total of 23 casualties have been reported.

Telangana that saw 173 cases of swine flu in 2016 has witnessed a total of 1,704 cases by August 28 this year. Kerala recorded 74 deaths due to swine flu till August 30. In Tamil Nadu, 3,000 H1N1 cases and 15 deaths have been reported since January whereas, in Goa, over 190 cases of swine flu were reported out of which 19 died. Assam has reported four death out of 200 cases and the disease has claimed five lives in West Bengal.
