Chennai, Oct 20: At least nine employees of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) died after the roof of an old bus stand collapsed early on Friday. Three workers were rescued from the debris and rushed to the Government Hospital in Karaikal. The TNSTC employees were asleep when the roof collapsed around 3:30 am.

The roof collapsed on bus crew who were scheduled to operate early morning services. The Fire and Rescue Service have recovered all eight bodies and managed to save three lives as well. Nagapattinam District Collector Dr C Suresh Kumar visited the spot and conducted enquiries. The building was constructed about 60 years ago had developed cracks and was in need of repairs, said The Hindu report quoting sources.

Tamil Nadu Chief minister Edapaddi Palanisami announced a solatium of Rs 7.5 lakh to the family members of each of the deceased and Rs 1.50 Lakh to the seriously injured. Those with minor injuries will receive Rs 50,000, announced the government. The CM also announced a job for a family member of the deceased in the transport department, on the basis of their qualifications.
