Chennai: Following the arrest of independent MLA from Tamil Nadu- Karunas for making a provocative speech earlier, the MLA was produced before a magistrate today. Notably, the MLA issued a death threat to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswami and a police officer while addressing party cadres in Chennai’s Valluvarkottam, a news channel reported.
“There are two-three officers who wear tight shirts and sunglasses after watching movies like Singam and Saamy. The senior officers should tell them that they are public servants and they are here to serve people. Saligramam is our area, it is where we live and it is where we will die. I am also a public servant. We were patient because you are a young Tamil IPS officer but you levelled allegations against our members. We spend Rs 1 lakh on liquor itself,” India Today reported the MLA as saying during his speech in Chennai.
A case of criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity, disharmony, attempt to murder and issuing a death threat under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against him by the police. However, the magistrate rejected the charge of Section 307 attempt to murder and gave the MLA a remand under judicial custody till October 5.
Stirring a political row in the Southern state, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief MK Stalin did not approve of the arrest of the MLA. He said in a tweet, “The rule of law in Tamil Nadu wherein each one is treated differently is worrying. Why was Karunas arrested when people like SV Shekar who spoke ill about women and H Raja who spoke against the court are still not arrested?”
Karunas is the founder of a caste outfit named Mukkulatuor Puli Padai.
