Tamil Nadu BJP: A local leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was brutally hacked to death in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu on Saturday night, even as the police claimed that the murder was a result personal animosity between the accused and the victim and not motivated by political ideology.

According to the police, the victim, Selvakumar, 52, the Cooperative Wing Secretary of the BJP, was attacked with sharp-edged weapons by a group of four men when he was heading home on his motorcycle on Saturday night.

“The incident occurred on Saturday night when the victim was travelling to his home in M Vilankulam on his motorcycle. After purchasing some products in the local market, he was travelling to his home which is four kilometres away from the spot where the incident occurred. He died on the spot,” a senior police officer said.

The officer said that all four accused have been identified and the police have formed eight special teams to nab them.

Murder not politically motivated

Asked about the motive behind the brutal killing, the officer, citing initial investigation and interaction with the victim’s family, asserted that murder was motivated by personal issues between the accused and the victim, not by political leanings.

“It is not related to his political party position or his ideology. It is because of some personal issue. We have identified the four accused who are involved in the crime,” the official said Sunday, adding that the body of the 52-year-old victim was handed over to his family for last rites after an autopsy at the district government hospital.

Accused identified, traced

He said the police have identified and traced the four accused and efforts are underway to bring them to the book. “Eight special teams have been formed. We have identified the location of the four accused right now. Very soon, we will secure them into custody.”

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, the victim’s family members and BJP supporters staged a ‘road roko’, raising slogans demanding that the police arrest the culprits.

Tamil Nadu killings

Tamil Nadu has recently witnessed a wave of alleged political murders, bringing the law and order in the DMK-ruled state under the scanner.

Recently, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Tamil Nadu unit chief K Armstrong was hacked to death in a eerily similar manner, by a group of men in Chennai, triggering widespread outrage from opposition parties, including the AIADMK, who have flagged the issue of deteriorating law and order in the state.
