Tuticorin: A Thoothukudi district court order on Thursday directed the police to file an FIR against BJP state chief and her party cadre for allegedly threatening a research scholar. The order came out in favour of the research scholar’s father, who registered a complaint against the BJP state chief.
Last month, Sofia, a research scholar from the University of Montreal in Canada, was verbally assaulted by BJP state chief Tamilisai Soundararajan and her party cadre. Sofia’s father, AA Samy had approached the court to register a complaint against the state BJP president after the police refused to take up his case.
On September 3, based on a complaint by BJP state chief Soundararajan, police arrested 28-year-old research scholar Lois Sofia from Tuticorin airport for raising anti-BJP slogans in flight. Samy, along with his wife Madhuri went to Chennai airport to receive their daughter. Soon they landed at the Tuticorin airport where their daughter Sofia had allegedly shouted ‘fascist BJP government down, down’ at the BJP state chief.
A report by Indian Express quoted Samy as saying, “When we reached the terminal, Tamilisai and some 10 men who received her at the airport surrounded us and bullied my daughter with abusive words. They issued death threats. Finally, the airport police came to our help and secured us in a room.”
Sofia was arrested under Section 75 of the Tamil Nadu City Police (TNCP) Act, 1888. She was taken into a judicial custody for a period of 15 days. The day after her arrest, Magistrate S Tamilselvi granted an unconditional bail to Sofia.
