Tamil Nadu: A thunderstorm was witnessed in Chennai on Sunday afternoon, which brought some respite to the residents from the hot weather as a significant drop was seen in the temperature. Amidst thunderstorm activity, there are high chances of the city witnessing rains can in the next two days, reports said.

“Moderate thunderstorms with rain is likely to occur in some areas of Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur,” a press release from Regional India Meteorological Department stated.

It must be noted that Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district experienced 100 mm rainfall in just an hour on Saturday. Various regions of districts such as Virudhunagar, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram also received rainfall in a good amount on the same day.

On July 2, Chennai and the adjoining areas in Tamil Nadu received light showers. The city received moderate rainfall from 10 am till 1 pm. With this sudden rain, temperatures in Chennai and the surrounding areas had cooled down. The gusty winds caused damage to the trees in some parts of the city. Following which, the Chennai Meteorological Department issued a warning notice to people who fish from the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast off the coast of Bengal and the Andaman Sea since the wind speed from the southwest is of high intensity.
