Hyderabad: In an incident quite similar to the hacking of a Dalit man in front of his pregnant wife, a newly-married couple was attacked by the woman’s father with a sickle, injuring the two seriously in Hyderabad’s SR Nagar area on Wednesday evening, said reports.

According to The Indian Express, police said Sandeep, from Scheduled Caste community, and Madhavi, from the Backward Class community, got married about a month ago. Madhavi’s family opposed the marriage and had even warned them. After Wednesday’s attack, Madhavi was rushed to Yashoda Hospital with her hand nearly chopped off. Sandeep has suffered injuries to his back.
Sandeep, 21, is a student of Vivekananda Degree College at Kukatpally while Madhavi, 18, has just completed class 12. Police said the couple had known each other for many years before deciding to tie the knot. Sandeep has a widowed mother.

His friend Naveen Kumar said that Madhavi’s father had first called the couple, saying that he wanted to see his daughter on Wednesday morning. When the couple arrived at the meeting place on SR Nagar road, a man approached them. CCTV visuals showed the man removing his helmet, taking out a sickle from a bag and attacking the couple. The man hit Sandeep, who can be seen falling to one side as the woman tries to stop the person. An eyewitness said the women shouted, “Nanna (daddy) stop it, stop it” as the person hit her four times with the sickle. When a bystander tried to prevent the man from attacking Madhavi, the attacker threatened him as well. The incident occurred in broad daylight on a main road.

Meanwhile, in the daylight murder of a Dalit man last week, Telangana Police have arrested seven people, including a suspected contract killer from Bihar and the girl’s father. Subhash Sharma and his gang members were allegedly hired by Maruti Rao for Rs 1 crore to murder his son-in-law Perumalla Pranay Kumar as the former disapproved of the marriage. Among those arrested are two men acquitted in the murder of former Gujarat home minister Haren Pandya.
