Thane: The Thane Municipal Corporation has ordered the evacuation of almost 57 flats in the Uthalsar housing society on Monday after a tilt was detected in a building. A structural audit has been commissioned to ascertain the cause of the damage and determine the building’s fate. The residents in the locality alleged that the building was regularly repaired and thus well-maintained. Though the Om Surya building was in good condition, the corporation officials hinted the possibility of damage since the building is located close to a ravine. Also Read - Over 5 Injured As Pillar Of Under-Construction Metro Bridge Collapses In Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi

At around 8.30 pm on Wednesday, the ground-floor residents of the three-storey building heard sounds from the walls and columns of the building. In no time the floor tiles, columns, and beams of lower-floor flats developed cracks. The residents soon alerted their neighbours about it. On receiving information, the municipal officials reached the spot. Besides, a police team from Thane station also rushed to the spot and began the evacuation process. Residents who were evacuated in the process were temporarily accommodated at a corporation facility along Ghodbunder Road by TMC. A resident told Times of India, “We heard cries from our neighbours, asking us to evacuate the building saying it was falling apart. Fearing the worst, we managed to gather whatever belongings we could collect and ran out of our homes after locking them. We were horrified to see that the structure had begun to lean on one side.” Also Read - Maharashtra: Over 34 People Hospitalised After Chemical Vapours Leak From Factory In Thane

“Some construction work was also taken up in the area adjoining the nullah, which must have blocked the flow of drain water to the creek due to which it could have accumulated in the soil over the past few years, leading to weakening of the foundation. The building was otherwise well-maintained,” said BJP corporator Milind Patankar. Milind Patankar represented the area until the last election.
