Mumbai, Feb 21: The exit poll conducted by a private channel India Today showed Shiv Sena may sweep Municipal corporation elections in Thane. The exit polls expects that Shiv Sena may win 62 to 70 seats while Bharatiya Janata Party may win 26-33 seats. Thane Municipal Corporation consists of 130 wards. In the 2012 civic polls, the ruling BJP-Sena government won 61 seats out of the 130 seats. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party snapped its electoral ties with Shiv Sena after 25 years.
The municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra bear special political significance as many people in the political spectrum are seeing these elections as semi-final to Maharashtra assembly elections in 2019. Along with the municipal corporations in Thane, elections would also be held in the civic bodies of Pune (PMC), Nashik (NMC), Ulhasnagar, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur and Amravati.

The municipality elections are also seen by Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to reclaim power in the state. Currently, Congress-NCP coalition is ruling four municipal corporations including Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur and Amravati corporations. However, both the parties have not formed an alliance to contest other corporations under a united banner.
Many political observers have said that the mandate of municipal corporation elections should be seen in the light of major steps of the Central government including demonetisation.
