Indian fashion is in an incredibly interesting, dynamic place right now. With every passing season, designers have been stepping away from traditional staples of Indian apparel such jewel-toned fabrics, heavy embellishment, and dramatically flared silhouettes in favor of elements clearly derived from the Western fashion industry. This is an exciting change. After all, Western designers have been taking cues from Indian fashion for years – and now that Indian designers are looking to the West for inspiration, we’re seeing a much more fluid relationship between India’s fashion scene as compared to the rest of the world’s.
It’s fitting—fluidity could very well have been the theme for 2016 W/F Lakme Fashion Week (LFW). The shows featured eye-popping looks from designers such as Manish Malhotra, Tarun Tahilani and Sabyasachi Mukherjee gracing the runways. There were definitely plenty of looks that sum up what’s happening in Indian fashion right now–a modernization with distinct Western influence–there were also some very traditional looks. Then there were the looks that straddled these two styles, which composed the majority of the show and created that aforementioned fluidity. Here are some of the most show-stopping looks from LFW. Whether traditional, contemporary or some fusion of the two, they are all signs that India is a major player in the global fashion equation.What a perfect example of a traditional Indian ensemble designed in a fresh and eye-catching manner. Red is such an iconic shade for Indian bridal wear; by using a deep brown shade instead, he has managed to elevate this to an incredibly classic look. The stunning Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan walked the runway and pulled this look off beautifully.
Talk about influence from the West! The soft, draping lines and sleek black hue of this dress may not scream “Indian” but the keen attention to detail displayed in this piece’s workmanship is very much a staple of South Asian design. We love the unstructured skirt of this gown’s contrast to the edgy, linear cape-style top.
We have seen so many red-and-gold outfits on Indian women because this color combination never fails—it’s bright and speaks volumes. However, this one puts all the other dresses to shame. “Parched” actress Radhika Apte strutted this truly amazing look, complete with a dramatic train and flattering A-line construction. We love how this piece pulls very traditional Indian elements of the colors and the embroidery, contrasting them with such a sweeping Western-style silhouette.
This just might be the most dramatic look of the entire week. We absolutely love the dark, mysterious quality of this strapless gown, which is made edgier and more eye-catching thanks to the sheer cape worn over it during the runway show. The diagonal pattern on the full skirt is the perfect way to break up the monochromatic look and keep things fresh and interesting.
We certainly never expected to see fur grace an Indian fashion show’s runway! Hand it to Sabyasachi to bring something so completely unexpected. This full fur coat contrasted beautifully with all the heavily embellished looks he showed – and while it’s often too hot to wear fur in India, anything goes on the runway.
