Mindy Kaling—aka our favorite Indian-American actress on television—is going to stick around for at least another season. Streaming service Hulu has renewed “The Mindy Project,” which Kaling produces, writes, and stars in, for a fifth season. The show will conclude its current fourth season in July.

“The Mindy Project” was broadcast on FOX for its first three seasons before being canceled by the network. Luckily for us, Hulu brought it back immediately—and dare I say that not being on a broadcast channel is the best thing that has happened to the show. Kaling stars as OB-GYN Mindy Lahiri, an intellectually smart woman who is hilarious, of course, while also being flawed. However, over the course of four seasons, Lahiri has also done a lot of growing up.
When we started out, she was a boy crazy doctor who, episode after episode, dated different guys. Her long-term relationships came with their own set of drama as the show slowly built towards an inevitable love story between her and colleague Danny Castellano (Chris Messina). Castellano is a traditional Italian-American man who sticks to his beliefs, which may sometimes be wrong—but he also makes grand gestures such as traveling to India to convince Lahiri’s parents, played by the brilliant Sakina Jaffrey and Ajay Mehta, to let him marry her.
The turning point in their relationship was a few episodes before this gesture. Lahiri gets into a great program at Stanford and has to leave the practice she shares with Castellano and fellow doctor, Jeremy (Ed Weeks), While trying out this long-distance relationship, the couple finds out that she is pregnant. Eventually, after the birth of their son and their engagement, the fourth season did a great job of showing us the reality of what happens in relationships after the ‘happily ever after’ phase.
Lahiri and Castellano have always been two very different people, whether it’s about their choice in movies or food, or even just core values. However, as actors, Kaling and Messina totally sold their cutesy chemistry to audiences—and therefore, it was easy to root for them. This season, though, we started seeing a different side of Castellano, which wasn’t surprising altogether—but much like his partner, we assumed he had done some growing up too. So, instead of supporting Lahiri’s growing career when she opened her own fertility clinic, he instead started questioning her priorities and wanted her to be a stay-at-home mom—and even tried tricking her into another pregnancy. When their disparateness became obvious to them, they split up.
Despite that, this season is not lacking in jokes or humor, thanks to Lahiri’s usual ditziness and hilarious co-workers like Doctor Jeremy, nurses Morgan (Ike Barinholtz) and Tamra (Xosha Roquemore), and administrative aid, Beverly (Beth Grant). This season we also got two newcomers in nurse Collette (Fortune Feimster) and her brother Dr. Jody (Garret Dillahunt), who may just be a potential love interest for our newly separated doctor.
With these additions and the incredible chemistry between the cast, the show continues to rely on solid humor to push itself forward. A slew of great guest stars such as Cristin Milioti and Eliza Coupe helps too. Fellow actors Kunal Nayyar (“The Big Bang Theory”) and Frieda Pinto (“Slumdog Millionaire”) also made an appearance in the first episode of this season.
With season 5 a certainty for the show, we hope they bring on our other faves Aziz Ansari and Hannah Simone for a guest arc! Mainly, “The Mindy Project” should continue to be the solid, feisty, and risky comedy—much like Kaling herself, then—that it is now.
