“Rock On” is more than just your usual Bollywood entertainer. The 2008 film starred Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli, and Luke Kenny as members of rock band Magik. It was the first time we experienced Hindi rock music along with great storytelling and acting — a combination we didn’t know was possible. After tugging at our heart strings and introducing us to some great music, the gang is back after six years to do the same.
In the first teaser of “Rock On 2,” we say hello to old gang, except Kenny, but including Prachi Desai and Shahana Goswami. There are also two newbies to this crew in the form of Shraddha Kapoor and Shashank Arora.
As a refresher, in the first film, which was also Akhtar’s acting debut, he played Aditya Shroff. He was the rebellious lead singer of Magik. Rampal was Joe Mascarenas, the lead guitarist. Kohli was drummer KD and Kenny was Rob Nancy, the keyboard player. Goswami played Debbie, Joe’s partner.
After some initial struggles, Magik started getting popular, and Aditya became the focus of the people. This caused a rift between him and Joe, which eventually causes the band to break-up. For the next few years, each of them follows their own journey. Aditya has married Sakshi, played by Desai. They’re not happy together because Aditya is cold and distant. She believes bringing the band back together will help save him.
In the teaser for the sequel, the band hasn’t performed on stage for quite a few years despite reuniting in the first film. However, they’re back and stronger than ever. This is due to new additions, singer Jiah Sharma (Kapoor) and another member Uday (Arora).
We can hear Akhtar and Kapoor crooning to the title track together, and they sound excellent! The focus of the teaser is only and only the music of Magik, which is perfect. We need diverse films like this! After the success of “Rock On,” it is no surprise that we’re getting a sequel. Let’s hope it’s packed with even better music, acting, and plots this time. Plus, we already know the cast’s chemistry is off the charts.
Kapoor has already proven her singing mettle with songs such as “Sab Tera” from “Baaghi,” “Teri Galliyan” from “Aashiqui 2,” and “Do Jahaan” from “Haider.” Akhtar, as we know from not just “Rock On” but also “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” and “Dil Dhadakne Do,” is a melodious singer. Together, they will definitely make magic.
“Rock On 2” is directed by Shujaat Saudagar. The music will release on September 17, 2016, and the film will hit theaters on November 11, 2016.
