New Delhi: Soon after news reports surfaced that two Dalits were brutally thrashed by showroom employees on a theft case in Rajasthan’s Nagaur area, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday termed the incident ‘horrific and sickening’, and asked the state government to take immediate action. “The recent video of two young Dalit men being brutally tortured in Nagaur, Rajasthan is horrific and sickening. I urge the State Government to take immediate action to bring the perpetrators of this shocking crime to justice,” he said on Twitter. The statement from the Congress leader came after a video of the two Dalit men being thrashed went viral on social media.

According to updates from the police, two Dalits, who were allegedly caught stealing money from a two-wheeler agency, were beaten up by the employees of the showroom staffers in Nagaur district. The employees in the video can be seen stripping one of the Dalit men and the video also showed the employees inserting a screwdriver dipped in petrol in another Dalit man.

Police later stated that seven people involved in the incident have been detained. Police also stated that the showroom employees have also lodged a case against the two Dalit men.

Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s tweet and to the incident, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said that effective action has already been taken.

“In the horrific incident in Nagaur, immediate and effective action has been taken and seven accused have been arrested so far. Nobody will be spared. The culprits will be punished according to the law and we will ensure that the victims get justice,” Gehlot said on Twitter.
