Bollywood films tend to fall into one of these few categories, there are quirky romantic comedies, intense social dramas, and boundary-pushing edgy films. Then there are the blockbusters, the high-octane, action-packed dazzlers with massive budgets and tremendous star power. “A Flying Jatt” belongs to this list.

The superhero action genre is one Bollywood doesn’t often explore but it’s the focus of this film. Because this is Bollywood, you can expect a lighthearted, comedic element amidst all the action. In this case, some of the humor seems to stem from the fact that the superhero in question is…afraid of heights.

“A Flying Jatt” stars Tiger Shroff, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nathan Jones, Kay Kay Menon, and Amrita Singh. The cast is chock full of rising stars and classic heroes – but we’re undoubtedly the most excited to see what Shroff brings to his leading role. After all, this is the son Jackie Shroff, who made a name for himself as one of Bollywood’s most dynamic action stars. We suspect this will be a break out role for the 26-year-old star.

Shroff has also appeared in “Heropanti” and most recently, “Baaghi.” but his role in this film will likely be his most buzz-worthy yet.

The movie’s trailer starts off with an explosion – literally. Its first frame features a building that is up in flames. We catch a glimpse of Shroff in full superhero garb through a few licks of fire – and then the dialogue begins. It’s interspersed with shots of the titular superhero flying, running at lightning speed and making a grand entrance by descending through a doorway.

This is clearly a well-rounded film. In addition to moments of action, the trailer also teases some comedy (Shroff’s character is seen spewing witty quips to distract his adversaries) and romance: The superhero is seen romancing a beautiful heroine while suspended in midair. He even utters this romantic line, “You’re not one in a million. You are the one.”

This film also has plenty of classic Bollywood touches. There are are some downright slapstick moments, the hero’s mother is as spirited and overbearing as some of the greatest Bollywood moms we’ve seen and of course, fantastical imagery abounds. And don’t be alarmed but you will see some song-and-dance sequences in this film, despite that the fact that more and more new Hindi films don’t dip into the musical theatrics these days.

Overall, “A Flying Jatt”is the movie you should see if you want a little bit of everything, music, romance, comedy, action and some sweet dance sequences.  As the tagline says in reference to the film’s hero, “This Jatt kicks butt.” Time will tell if the film does as well.

Directed by Remo D’Souza, the film releases on August 25, 2016.
