Lucknow, April 30: Addressing a coordination meet of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that mere sloganeering in the praise of cow would not save it. He urged the gathering to take constructive steps which would save the bovine animal.
“By only saying Gau mata ki jai, the cows cannot be safeguarded. You must raise slogans for gau mata, but also make honest efforts from your side to support them. Only then would the cows survive,” Adityanath said.

After coming to power, Yogi administration raided the suspected illegal abattoirs across the state resulting in uproar in meat shop owners. Meat Shop owners alleged that police has started harassing meat sellers. To express their anguish, meat sellers went on a strike. Similarly, the state has witnessed a spike in the violent attacks by alleged cow vigilantes.
Many analysts find that the ruling party’s reluctance in condemning the violence by cow vigilantes is an attempt to further polarise the situation of next parliamentary elections in 2019. Uttar Pradesh has been at the centre of violence from the colonial era with regard to cow vigilantism. In 1893, the first big communal riot took place in Azamgarh. Stringent laws has been passed across the country in BJP ruled states to ban the cow slaughter. Gujarat amended its laws and extended the term of punishment for persons involved in cow slaughter.
Defending his move to denotify the holidays in the name of various leaders, Yogi Adityanath said that the move will benefit the state by Rs. 50-60 crores. Adityanath added that revered personalities should not be classified on their caste. It is unfortunate that we have started identifying them on their caste. Yogi Adityanath government recently denotified the birth/death anniversaries of leaders like Karpoori Thakur, Chandrasekhar and Chaudhari Charan Singh.
The coordination meet is considered to be crucial ahead of civic polls in Uttar Pradesh. While the Bharatiya Janta Party is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring victory in civic polls, the opposition parties like Samajwadi Party and Congress are eyeing the opportunity to reverse the blow in Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. However, the Congress and Samajwadi Party are unlikely to forge an alliance after a humiliating defeat in assembly elections.
