New Delhi: Traffic chaos and overcrowding in and around the Connaught Place and India Gate on the evening of the first day of 2019 has left commuters facing a tough time.

The heavy rush prompted the Delhi Metro authorities to shut exits of four Metro station with close proximity to India Gate. The exits from Central Secretariat, Mandi House, Pragati Maidan and Udyog Bhawan metro stations was closed from 2.50 pm.

Traffic jams were reported near Rithala Metro Station, GPO New Delhi roundabout, at Najafgarh market’s outer road, near Savitri while going towards Kalkaji Mandir, outside Bangla Sahib Gurdwara and near the Jhandewalan metro station, reported Hindustan Times.

In view of the heavy rush of people near the India Gate, Delhi Police has also put restrictions on the movement of traffic. Over one lakh people are expected to have gathered around the India Gate.

Traffic is heavy on Mathura Road near National Zoological Park. The coo entry will be closed at 4 pm, said Delhi Traffic Police in a tweet.

In a bid to ease traffic on the New Year’s eve, the Delhi Police had restricted entry of kinds of vehicles from 8.00 pm onwards at Connaught Place till the celebrations concluded.

A special drive against drunk driving, jumping signals and dangerous driving was also undertaken by the traffic police.
