New Delhi: As many as seven devotees, including four women, were killed and 10 injured in a stampede on Sunday in Tamil Nadu’s Trichy at the Karuppasamy temple in Muthayampalayam village.
The incident is believed to have occurred after the devotees tried to receive the rupee coins or the ‘Padi Kasu’ from the temple priest.
These coins are believed to bring wealth and prosperity and are distributed as a ritual at the temple.
When thousands of devotees reached out for the coins, a push and shove ensued leading to a stampede.
All the injured have been admitted to the Thuraiyur hospital and an investigation has been ordered into the incident.
