Lucknow, April 11: A victim of triple talaq reportedly ended her life by hanging herself in Uttar Pradesh. According to a report of ETV UP, the incident took place in Tikaura village. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre has been stressing on ending this triple talaq practice and the women from Muslim community in India’s largest state Uttar Pradesh have urged their new chief minister Yogi Adityanath to lay out a new policy in this matter, saying a divorce can’t happen just by saying ‘talaq’ three times. It is being speculated that the 21st CM of UP might soon take a call on this matter. Many Muslim men have practised triple talaq and have taken the path of digital platforms like WhatsApp, voice calls, apart from letters. In another incident, a Muslim woman was reportedly forced to leave her in-laws’ house after she fell victim to triple talaq. The BJP had promised the people of Uttar Pradesh before polls that it will crack down on the controversial divorce practice. Last year, the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre also sought the intervention of the Supreme Court in doing away with the practice of triple talaq.
On Monday, the central government said in the apex court that triple talaq destroys the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution of India to Muslim women in the country. The BJP government is firm on its stance and told SC that such practices make Muslim women unequal and vulnerable. The Centre reiterated that Muslim women should enjoy the fundamental rights guaranteed to them.
