BJP Sweeps Tripura, Wins 35 Seats; CPI-M Left With 16, Congress Draws Blank

In a saffron surge in the northeast, the BJP put up a spectacular show in Tripura on Saturday, ending 25 years of the Left rule.

Agartala, Mar 3: The results of Tripura Assembly election 2018 will be declared today. Counting of votes for Tripura Assembly elections results will begin at 8 am. The electoral fight is mainly between the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which tied up with Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT). Polling for the 59 of the 60 seats of Tripura Assembly was held on February 18. Balloting in Charilam seat has been deferred to March 12 after the death of a CPI-M candidate. Voter turnout in Tripura was over 92 per cent, which is a new record in the electoral history of India. While the CPI-M and the BJP contested election forging alliance with regional parties, the Congress entered the poll battle alone this time. However, the grand old party is unlikely to pose a major challenge to the Left Front in its bastion.

Tripura Assembly election saw a tough fight between the CPI-M and the BJP.The CPI-M led Left Front has ruled the northeastern state since 1993 under Chief Ministers Dasaratha Deb (1993-1998) and Manik Sarkar (1998-2018). The BJP hopes to wrest power from the Left Front after 20 years.The CPI-M fielded 56 candidates, leaving one seat each to its Left Front partners — the Communist Party of India, Forward Bloc and Revolutionary Socialist Party. The BJP contested in 50 seats and left nine seats for its ally, the IPFT.

The Congress fielded candidates for all 59 constituencies. However, its official nominee, Sukumar Chandra Das in Kakraban-Shalgarha Assembly seat withdrew his nomination and joined the BJP. While an exit poll predicted victory for the BJP alliance, ending the 25-year run of the Left Front in the state, another forecasted a close fight between the two parties.
