India-US relations: In another big step step impacting the India-US relations amid the already ongoing trade conflict between the two democracies of the world, the Donald Trump administration has proposed new rules to tighten visa durations for international students, cultural exchange visitors, and foreign journalists visiting the United States. Under the recent rule change, the US has announced that visa period for students and cultural exchange visitors will not be more than four years. In the recently announced step, the US administration has tightened the visa period for students, cultural exchange visitors and media persons. Under the plan, ‘F’, ‘J’, and ‘I’ visas will no longer remain valid for the entire duration of study or employment but will instead be capped at fixed periods.
According to the proposal, student and cultural exchange visas will be limited to a maximum of four years, while journalist visas will be restricted to 240 days. For Chinese citizens, the limit will be only 90 days, a move that has drawn protests from Beijing.
The US government noted that in 2024 there were 1.6 million international students, 3.55 lakh cultural exchange visitors, and 13,000 media personnel. Officials argue the change is needed for closer monitoring, though a similar rule introduced in 2020 was withdrawn by the Biden administration in 2021.
