Mysuru, Aug 7: Two Dalits were arrested by Mysuru police on Sunday when they attempted to organize a beef festival. The Dalits were taken into custody citing threat to public order. According to the police, no prior permission was taken to organize the fest. As it could had provoked the sentiments of Hindus in the city, police decided to detain the organizers and disrupt their event.
The beef festival was organized by Karnataka Dalit Welfare Trust to protest against the flogging of Dalits in Una, who were found with cow carcassess handed over to them for skinning. Organizer of the event, Shantaraju claims that the beef fest was their symbolic form of protest to assert their right to live and right to eat peacefully.
However, Mysuru police claims that the Karnataka Dalit Welfare Trust took permission only to protest in front of the Town Hall. No permission was sought by them to organize the beef festival. Since they were violating the norms, the police present there had to take them into custody.
Mysuru Police Commissioner B Dayananda defended their arrest saying that the security force has to prevent the disruption of peace. He further claimed that a probe would be conducted in the incident to ascertain future course of action against the arrested duo.
According to reports, the beef festival was completely flop and no Dalit groups in the city participated in it. Although the organizers expected 200-250 people to turn up, only about a dozen people gathered outside the Town Hall. Although, they were allowed to hold the demonstration to condemn the atrocities against Dalits, the police had to intervene when two auto-rikshaw drivers brought vessels of beef at the venue to distribute among the protesters.
