New Delhi, Feb 22: Nearly 10 days after absconding, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid returned to the campus late on Sunday night. Umar, along with five other students – Anirban Bhattacharya, Ashutosh Kumar, Anant Prakash Narayan, Riyazul Haq and Rama Nega were booked under sedition for allegedly organizing the Afzal Guru commemoration rally in February 9. The six students had subsequently went into hiding.

Khalid was received with much fanfare on JNU campus, where he delivered a solid speech attacking the Government. “My name is Umar Khalid…and I’m not a terrorist,” he said. (ALSO READ: My name is Umar Khalid and I’m not a terrorist: JNU student speaks up)

“For the past 10 days, I’ve been hearing numerous theories about me. They (Government) have called me a member of Jaish-e-Muhammad. They said, I’ve visited Pakistan on two occasions. When did this happen? How untrue this could be?”

Meanwhile Delhi Police have refrained from cracking down inside the campus, citing the lack of permission granted to them. The six students, including Khalid are expected to surrender themselves before the police today.

Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi has demanded co-operation from the protesting students. “Our CID team has entered inside the campus. I appeal the students to co-operate with the law. If they have not done anything wrong then there is no reason to evade the law,” he said.

According to one of the students Rama Nega, who returned with Khalid, they were forced to abscond since there was “an atmosphere of mob-lynching.”
