Lucknow, August 10: Amidst widespread protests and debates on the issue of Dalit atrocities in the country, another shocking incident of violence with a 13-year-old girl and his father has been reported from Gunnaur in Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh. The girl and her father were both thrashed for drawing water from a hand pump, as it was reserved just for the use of only upper caste. The incident occurred when the girl had gone to draw water from the hand pump, but the temple priest didn’t allow her to do that. When her father confronted the temple authorities on the matter, the priest attacked him with a trishul (trident).

A case has been registered under the SC/ST Act and two people have been arrested in the matter. The incident comes against the backdrop of widespread protests against Dalit atrocities in the country. The issue was also raised in the Parliament, with Bahujan Samajwadi Party leader Mayawati attacking the current government for not acting against those brutalising Dalits. She also said that Modi’s impassioned words on the subject were just a strategy to woo voters ahead of the Assembly elections in 2017. “Modi was silent for the last two years. He slept like ‘Kumbhakarna’ (the mythological character in Ramayana who slept for six months at a stretch)”, the Dalit leader said. ALSO READ: Rahul Gandhi’s UP Dalit conclave an attempt to fool people: Mayawati

“He has woken up now because assembly elections are going to take place in Uttar Pradesh and some other states. He knew that he would not get a single Dalit vote. He gave the statements to get Dalit votes,” she added. Speaking in Telangana, Modi had come down heavily on those attacking and brutalising Dalits, saying, “if you have to attack, attack me” but stop attacking “my Dalit brethren.” He had lashed out at “fake Gau Rakshaks”, who were “diving the country” and that they should be isolated. He described the ‘self-styled’ cow vigilantes as dangerous and a threat to the society.
