Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party (SP-BSP) alliance has another senior Bharatiya Janata  Party leader to take a jibe at the alliance.

In the video, which has gone viral since, UP BJP chief Mahendra Nath Pandey, speaking at a public meeting, said, “Meine social media pe dekha ek naujavan ne post kar diya ki Shri Akhilesh ji, Maya ji ko shawl pehna rahe hain, Toh naujavan likhta hai niche –Akhilesh ke mooh se ki… ye wahi shawl hai jo guest house mein pita ji ne utara tha (Someone put up a post on social media with Akhilesh (Yadav) ji draping a shawl around Mayawati…the caption read, ‘This is the shawl that his father had pulled down at the guest house years ago).”

Pandey was referring to the infamous guest house incident of 1995 where the BSP chief was held hostage and roughed up by SP legislators.

Back then, the SP-BSP coalition had formed an alliance to stop the BJP juggernaut from winning the UP elections in 1993.

But in 1995, Mayawati withdrew support, leading to the fall of the Mulayam Singh government.  On June 2, 1995, angry SP workers marched into the Meerabai Guest House in Lucknow where Mayawati was in a meeting with her MLAs.

Reports said her room was vandalised, casteist and sexual slurs were thrown about, and she was beaten up. The BSP MLAs present in the room failed to protect her.

Then, BJP MLA Brahm Dutt Dwivedi escorted Mayawati to safety. After the episode, Mayawati went on to form the government with the BJP’s help.
