Bulandshahr (UP), July 1: A 44-year-old Dalit man was allegedly forced to lick his spit by a Panchayat in Bulandshahr over his son’s interfaith marriage, news agency ANI reported. The victim Shree Krishna alleged that the Panchayat told him that his wife and daughter would be paraded naked in the village. The police have registered a case in the Khurja Nagar police station and have arrested at least two people for assaulting Krishna and threatening to rape her wife and daughter.
“During a Panchayat meeting I was asked to spit and lick my own spit because my son married a Muslim girl. Panchayat also asked me to leave the village. They said that my wife & daughter should be paraded naked. I have filed a complained with police,” he was quoted as saying by ANI. He added that his family is living under fear since the incident.
Shree Krishna, a Dalit, said that his 21-year-old son fled with 18-year-old Razia of the same village after which, her family approached the police and filed a complaint against his son. The couple was brought back to the village and produced before the court. “The girl was produced before the court where she insisted that she went with Shivkumar of her own will and wanted to be with him,” he was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
The court let the couple remarry. Krishna, however, asked the couple to leave the village as he was concerned about their safety. However, on June 26, Krishna’s brother was asked to bring the boy’s father to Panchayat as the girl’s family wanted to settle the matter. Krishna alleged that when he sat on a chair, some of the locals pulled his ears and asked him to sit on the ground. “I was told to lick my own spit,” he said, adding he was thrashed when he refused to do so. “I finally did it.”
“We have received complaint from a dalit man who said that he was made to spit and lick his own spit during a panchayat meeting as his son had married a Muslim girl. We will take strict action against those responsible,” SP Dehat Bulandshahr said.
