UP civic Elections 2017: Latest Updates

Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which didn’t contest the last local polls in 2012, has emerged as the biggest gainer after the BJP. The party was ahead on two municipal corporations.

The Samajwadi Party and the Congress had contested the February, March Assembly elections together but the alliance was swept away the BJP which won over 300 seats in the 403-seat Uttar Pradesh Assembly. Both the parties are once again facing humiliation as none of them appear to be winning even a single municipal corporation.

As per initial trends available, the BJP candidates were leading in seats including Lucknow, Allahabad, Aligarh, Varanasi, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur, Faizabad and Moradabad municipal corporations while the BSP was ahead in Jhansi and Agra municipal corporations. The BJP is also leading in PM Modi’s constituency Varanasi, where it will have a mayor for the fifth consecutive time and Ayodhya-Faizabad.

‘People Have Shown Faith in Yogi Adityanath’

Elated over the trends, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Dinesh Sharma said that results are a proof of Yogi Adityanath’s hard work in the state. Sharma said people of Uttar Pradesh have shown faith in BJP’s ideology while rejecting the SP and Congress completely.

“The SP, the BSP and the Congress contested the polls as each other’s relatives. (SP chief) Akhilesh Yadav and (Congress vice president) Rahul Gandhi, who were together during assembly polls as ‘UP ke ladke’ have become like the tyre and tube of a cycle and it has got punctured,” Sharma said.

The final results are expected by this evening. Results will be communicated to the candidates through SMS on their registered mobile numbers.
