Lucknow: The death toll in the New Farakka Express train derailment has reached seven. At least 21 people have been injured as well after nine bogies derailed in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli on Wednesday morning. After Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of deceased, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of deceased, Rs 1 lakh compensation for those with serious injuries and Rs 50,000 for those with minor injuries.

Meanwhile, PM Modi paid condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for those injured so that they recovered quickly.

All the passengers have been rescued but it will take 24-36 hours for the clearance, said DRM Northern Railways.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Anand Kumar said that drones ad long-range cameras are being used to monitor the situation at the site of the incident. Kumar also added that heavy-duty cutters were being used to extricate trapped passengers.

Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has directed to effectively undertake relief and rescue operation and also provide the best possible medical help to the injured. Goyal has ordered an inquiry which will be conducted by Commission of Railway Safety, Northern Circle. UP CM Yogi Adityanath had earlier directed the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police, health authorities and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to reach the spot and provide all the possible help.

The incident took place 50 meters from the Harchandpur railway station.

As per reports, the train was running on the wrong track. The New Farakka Express runs from West Bengal’s Malda up till New Delhi. Helpline numbers have also been released by the Indian Railways.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, two separate incidents of train derailment were reported in Tamil Nadu, with one person dying in Ambattur after a weighbridge container fell on him. As per Southern Railway officials, a goods train “rolled back” at Ambattur, leading to the derailment of a brake van and a wagon before they hit a dead end and a weighbridge container.
