The 35-year-old woman reportedly hanged herself from the roof at home on Monday. Reports said that in September 2018, the woman and her husband had tried to set themselves afire outside Vidhan Bhawan in Lucknow to highlight her plight.

Then also, they had accused the police of laxity in the probe.

The mother of two had accused Shankar Dayal and his brother Ashok Kumar, of the same area, of raping her several times in August. The case was investigated by the local police before it was handed over to the district crime branch. However, the accused were given a clean chit by the investigation officers in December, said reports.

The two accused are on the run. Following the suicide, the SP suspended both the investigating officers and sent the Kernalganj station house officer to the police lines.

The Gonda police had lodged an FIR on August 7 under section 376D (gang rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC along with relevant sections of IT Act against the accused.

The victim’s husband said, “The accused had not just raped her but also made a video clip of the act. She was very upset when police gave the accused a clean chit, and so committed suicide.”
