Faizabad: A government contractor of Uttar Pradesh was allegedly shot dead at his residence on Saturday. Police have registered a case against BJP legislator from Goshainganj Indra Pratap for the alleged crime. However, Pratap has denied the charges against him, claiming, he had “no connection with the incident.” Pratap said, “It is a case of suicide and is being given a political colour. I demand a high-level, unbiased inquiry into this matter.”

The incident took place at around 4 PM at the residence of the government contractor, Ajay Pratap Singh in Kaushalpuri Colony, stated police. Rajkumar Singh, the deceased’s father claimed that the BJP MLA was demanding money from his son.

The complaint was registered by Rajkumar who alleged that Pratap had threatened to kill Ajay if he did not pay the extortion money. Apart from Indra Pratap, two other unidentified persons were also booked for the murder of the UP contractor under the respective sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), said Faizabad Superintendent of Police Anil Singh.

In a similar incident during June, this year, a 40-year-old contractor was shot dead by unidentified persons in Puranpur area in Uttar Pradesh. Abrar Khan was allegedly murdered when he was sleeping in a mango orchard in Mujhse village. Immediately a case was registered and Khan’s body was sent for postmortem, police said. They added that the motive behind the murder was unclear.

In the month of January this year, unknown assailants shot dead Jagvir, a 47-year-old contractor working with the Municipal Board of Sikandrabad, for allegedly refusing to pay extortion of Rs five lakh they had demanded earlier, police said. The contactor was on his way to Sikandrabad town from his village Prangarh under Sikandrabad police station when the incident took place.
