Kanpur: A Uttar Pradesh jeweller reported a theft worth Rs 140 crore worth of gold and jewels with Kanpur police. Meanwhile, the police have launched a probe into the matter.

As of now, the police are checking CCTV footage of the shops and business establishments around the jewelry store to gain more clarity into the matter.

The shop where the alleged theft was reported was an equal partner shop that was closed on May 30, 2013, after the dispute, an official said. A court in Kanpur had sometime back ordered the shop to be opened by the police in presence of both partners.

However, the alleged theft took place just before it could be reopened.

In the police complaint, it has been alleged that 10,000 carats of diamonds, 500 kg of silver, 100 kg gold, and jewels worth 5,000 carats and some important business-related documents.

In another case, Noida Police said they arrested five people for their alleged involvement in jewellery thefts in the city. The accused were arrested from Sector 39 police station area when they were held by the officials for suspicious activity, they said.l

“Jewellery including half-dozen rings, a necklace, mobile phone, Rs 9,000 cash, debit/credit cards, besides a firearm with bullets and two daggers were seized from them,” the police said.
