New Delhi: Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh, OP Singh, on Thursday said that the Meerut incident is an act of gross imprudence and corrective action will be taken against those policemen. Two days ago a video went viral in which police personnel was seen abusing and slapping a young girl for allegedly choosing a Muslim partner.

Taking it to the micro-blogging site Twitter, Singh wrote, “The Meerut incident is an act of gross imprudence by few errant cops. Irresponsible & Insensitive behaviour by UP cops would not be tolerated. A job of a policeman is to maintain the highest standards of probity which must be upheld at all times. Corrective action is being taken.”

Reportedly, in the video, the girl is seen sitting between a woman constable and a male constable. Two policemen are sitting in the front. “You prefer Muslims when there are so many Hindus around,” said a policeman. At this point, the woman constable starts beating the girl. The beating goes on and on throughout. One of the cops had made the video.

The incident took place on Sunday when the woman and her Muslim friend were targeted by a group of men, allegedly from the right-wing Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). They barged into the Muslim man’s home, manhandled the pair and handed them over to the police. Both the girl and the boy are medical students.

The video has drawn a lot of criticism on the social media. People are criticizing the police for their action. Following the incident, police have suspended the cops and an inquiry has been set up.
