Deoband, March 16: Almost a week after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) marked a landslide victory in Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections by winning 324 seats in state constituency, the right-wing has already started to give a saffron push in some of the constituencies where it had won. Brijesh Singh, the newly elected MLA from Deoband constituency is preparing to table his first proposals in the first assembly session to rename his constituency from Deoband to ‘Dev Vrand’ arguing that the town is more famous for its links to the Mahabharat than Darul Uloom Deoband, the Islamic School which has its roots of Deobandi Islamic movement, Indian Express reported.
BJP MLA Brijesh Singh who defeated Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Majid Ali by 29,415 votes, was quoted by Indian Express where he said, “The name of the town – Deoband – is just a perception and it was always known as Dev Vrand only. Five Pandav’s and Mahabharat’s Rankhandi have worshipped here. Also, the famous village in this town names as Jarwala is actually Yakshawala and is the same place where ‘Yaksha’ has questioned Yudhisthir.”
Deoband is among the five constituencies of Saharanpur district of Western Uttar Pradesh. Which has a population of 65 per cent Muslims, is a home to one of the earliest Islamic revivalist movement of India. On Saturday, March 11, when Uttar Pradesh results were out Brijesh Singh emerged victorious and defeated Majid Ali of Bahujan Samaj Party with 29,415 votes and secured 1,02,00 votes from Muslim-dominated region.
Brijesh Singh also claimed that a majority of Muslim women have voted for him as they are happy with the Narendra Modi’s government stance on the triple talaq matter. The announcement was made by MLA during ‘Holi Milan’ event and claimed that he would not have have won by such a huge margin if Muslim women would not have voted for him. “Meri Muslim behne Modi ji ke sath hai aur woh bhi chahti hain ki teen Talaq band ho,” Brijesh Singh was quoted by Indian Express.
Since 2002, the Deoband constituency was a stronghold of the Bahujan Samaj Party or the Samajwadi Party and this is the first time the BJP had come to power in Deoband after 1996 assembly elections. It was 1993 assembly elections when the BJP came to power in Deoband. After Independence, it was Congress who had a stronghold in Deoband since 1951. But this time, political experts believe that the BJP’s empathetic victory can be pinned down to the division of Muslim votes between the SP and the BSP, resulting in the saffron party’s victory.
Almost after a decade of 1857 Indian uprising against Britishers, the Deobandi movement began against the British colonial rule in India. The Islamic school founded by Muslim scholar Shah Waliullah Dehlawi. the movement was based on the rationale that the downfall of the Mughal empire was a punishment to them for leaving the path of Islam.
