Kanpur, August 25: In a shocking incident in Uttar Pradesh, three youths threw acid at a woman aboard the Kanpur-Prayag Express, after she resisted their attempt to rape her. The victim has been hospitalised with burn injuries. This comes even as debates around the lawlessness in the state dominated the discourse all through last month, after a middle aged woman and her teenage daughter were brutally assaulted and raped in Bulandshahr. The two women were molested in a field off National Highway-91 by dacoits who waylaid the car that they were travelling in, beat their male family members and raped the women at gun point.
Just a few days after the Bulandshahr rape shocked the nation, another rape was reported from the state, wherein a 3-year-old was abducted from her house by her neighbour, raped and abandoned in a field near the village. Incidents of rape and acid attacks highlight the seriousness of the laxity of the law and order situation in India. Acid has been used a tool of intimidation by spurned lovers and anti-social elements to threaten and intimidate women to either give in to their sexual or romantic wishes, or to stay silent about abuse and rape. The incident was reported from Hanumangarh’s Talwara town in Rajasthan. The victim had sustained burn injuries on her hands, face and other body parts and was admitted to a hospital. It was found that the girl was being harassed by the same gang of four youths for quite some time. The family had even complained to the police, but they didn’t take any action against the accused, which emboldened them. One day, they sneaked into the girl’s house after midnight and attempted to gang rape her. When she resisted, they tried to abduct her.
