Kansas (US), July 8: A 26-year-old student from Telangana was shot dead after some unknown men opened fire inside a restaurant in Kansas City in Missouri, United States. The Indian-origin student, identified as Sharath Koppu, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. The incident was reported on Friday evening (US time) when some unidentified miscreants opened fire in at the J’s Fish and Chicken Market in Kansas City. Koppu’s relatives said that the victim received five bullet wounds. Eyewitness to the incident said that they heard five gunshots but it is not who shot at Koppu. The identity of the killer, who managed to escape, and the motive behind the killing and other details were not known. According to the reports, the incident is being treated as an attempt to robbery. The Kansas City Police have released videos and images of the accused and have declared $10,000 reward for any information about him. “Looking for this suspect in the robbery & murder of 25-y.o. Sharath Kopuu at 5412 Prospect last night. Sharath was from India and is a student at UMKC. $10,000 reward for info leading to charges in this (& every KCMO murder),” the Police tweeted.

“My cousin (Sharath Koppu) moved to the USA in January this year, after he received full scholarship to study at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Last night, we got to know that he was brutally killed by gun shots fired by unknown people around 8 PM (USA time. This is a very sad day for all of us,” victim’s cousin Sandeep Vemulakonda said.

Sharath hailed from Warangal town. After engineering, he was employed at a software firm in Hyderabad. He had moved to the US earlier this year and was studying at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). Sharath had completed this graduation from Vasavi College of Engineering.

Sharath’s father Ram Mohan, who is employed in BSNL, has appealed to Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and Telangana’s NRI Minister K.T. Rama Rao to help in bringing the body home.

The incident comes a year after another Indian techie from Hyderabad, Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, was killed at a bar in Kansas City in what looks like a racially motivated hate crime.

A US Navy veteran, Adam W. Purinton, shot Srinivas Kuchibhotla dead on February 22, 2017, after shouting “get out of my country’. In May, he was sentenced to life.
